Doctors fail to recognize serious conditions like stroke and sepsis in tens of thousands of patients each year, according to a new study.
Unfortunately, the study not only finds errors in diagnosing patients in emergency rooms, but it also highlights that women and people of color are at a 20-30% higher risk of being misdiagnosed. WOLF & FUHRMAN recommends that if you need to go to the ER seek care at a large academic medical center. The study finds you have a better chance of getting properly diagnosed at larger academic medical centers. Unfortunately, residents of the Bronx often do not often have the ability to go to large academic medical centers which are lacking in the Bronx, particularly in an emergency.
